A standard speed cube, re-stickered by hand into a state with no solution.
A cube that looks exactly like every cube you have ever solved. It is not.
Two stickers have swapped places. Not neighbours, and not the same face — a pair chosen so that nothing looks wrong until the end. The cube turns properly, the mechanism is fine, the colours are the right colours in the right quantities. Every algorithm anybody knows still works.
Why it cannot be finished
A cube in this state has no solution. Not a hard one. None. The last two pieces will refuse to sit down together no matter how many times the final sequence is repeated, and repeating the final sequence is precisely what a confident person does.
Who this is for
The friend with a personal best. The one who solves it on the train. This is the only box we make that is aimed squarely at competence, and it is the one that produces the longest silences.
They will assume they have made a mistake. They will scramble it and start again. That is the part worth waiting for.

Questions
Is the cube broken?
No. It turns exactly as it should and the mechanism is untouched. The only thing wrong with it is which sticker is where.
Can it be fixed?
In under a minute, with a fingernail, once they work out it is the stickers and not them. Getting to that thought is the slow part.
What if they do not solve cubes?
Then send them something else. This one only lands on somebody who is confident they can finish it — on anybody else it is just a cube they gave up on, which is what happens to most cubes anyway.
Will they know it came from me?
Only when they scan the card. You can stay anonymous right up until that moment.
