The case for ruining things
The Confectioner · No 07
A gift that works is forgotten by Tuesday. A gift that almost works is remembered for years, usually out loud, usually at your expense. That is the whole thesis.
Almost is the point
The failure has to be small enough to be believable and large enough to be fatal. One piece. One chapter. One twist of a corner. Anything bigger reads as a defect and gets returned. Anything smaller goes unnoticed.
Nobody has ever been annoyed by a jigsaw with fifty pieces missing. They have simply thrown it away. It is the single absent piece that does the work.
